Transitioning from active duty military to civilian life is in no way synonymous with merely changing jobs. Although the military offers transition programs, the programs do not necessarily prepare the transitioning person for a career and educational endeavors outside of military service. Although our veterans receive invaluable on-the-job training in a military environment, and they leave service with marketable skills, many veterans have educational or career goals exceeding the level of training received while in the military.

With the support of The Gulf Power Foundation’s pledge of $150,000, Northwest Florida State College celebrated the grand opening of its Veterans Success Center (VSC) in February 2019. The Veterans Success Center Provides Educational Opportunities, Transitional Services, and Career Services for Veterans and Their Families“The Veterans Success Center is our college’s way of making the world a better place for our veterans,” said Northwest Florida State College President, Dr. Devin Stephenson.

The Veterans Success Center offers a tranquil, professional, and respectful location, including state-of-the-art infrastructure and technology, where veterans can study or pursue other scholastic assignments. “When I separated from the military and became a student, I didn’t have any kind of guidance. I didn’t know where to start. I didn’t know who to ask questions to. I just kind of winged it, and I paid for it a little bit,” says Nita Storr, Veteran, and NWF Student. The VSC creates a cooperative community for veterans and provides resources for leadership, support, advisement, and campus engagement. Veterans receive assistance accessing and timely certifying their VA Educational benefits as well as completing the admission application process.

“Northwest Florida State College has a long and proud history providing educational assistance and opportunities which make a positive impact for our nation’s active-duty military, military veterans, and their families,” Stephenson offers. There is no doubt that Northwest Florida loves its veterans. We fully appreciate the sacrifices these brave men and women made to secure our freedoms and luxuries. Sacrifices that often came at personal cost, including career development and advanced educational opportunities. The Northwest Florida State College is honored to offer a place designated to improve the lives of veterans and their families. We are, after all, one nation.
